How to Record A Voiceover for Your Instagram Story

4/19/2020

I've been recording voiceovers for my daily reminders for the last few years and the most common question I get is, "how do you make them?" There's a few options you could try but I think mine is the most helpful and organized. Follow the steps below!

Create a Background

The first step to recording your voiceover is creating a background. You have a few options:
  • You could take a random photo, fill your frame with a background color, copy and paste your logo or any image to the bottom or top, and save it to a specific photo album for future reference. If you'll be posting often, you don't want to keep recreating the same background. Save yourself some time and extra effort. Plus, you'll stay more consistent and on brand.
  • You could also use apps like Over, SparkPost, or Unfold to create your background. They're very unique, super easy to use, and can catch people's eye. If those aren't your style, search through some of the top rated Instagram Story design apps in your app market and try them out. Most of them have a free week-long trial, so unsubscribe and delete if it doesn't fit. Make sure you set a reminder in your phone for when the trial ends.
  • You also have the option of creating your background in Photoshop, Illustrator or whatever program you use. Just make sure the size fits the 9x16 ratio at 1080 x 1920px.

Record your Voiceover

First things first, download the VideoShop App. It's the best app that I know of that can get this job done. Once you download it, play around a bit and get to know the app. I'd suggest purchasing it because it will be a helpful asset in the long run.
  1. Open the app and create a new clip by pressing the + on the top right corner.
  2. You have the option to record a new video but we're going to Import a new clip which will be the background we created.
  3. Find and select your background image. Once you have it selected, tap Done.
  4. You'll notice up at the top that you have a timeline. Your timeline is currently set to about 2 seconds. In order to fill an Instagram Story, we have to fill 15 seconds. So, select your background image in the bottom layer panel. Scroll the Toolset to the left, and on the third Toolset panel, look for Copy. You'll need to tap Copy about 9 times in order to get a 15-second timeline.
  5. Once you've copied your 15 seconds, scroll the top timeline or bottom layer panel back to the beginning background image.
  6. Scroll through your Toolset and find the Voice tool on the second Toolset panel. Tap Voice and record your voiceover. If you mess up, you have a few options. You could simply x out and tap record again, or you could keep recording and trim the clip after. Once you're done recording, tap the checkmark and your voiceover will be added to the top timeline.
  7. Select your voiceover by tapping on the microphone icon.
  8. Scroll through the bottom Toolset and select Trim.
  9. Use the yellow bars to trim your voiceover. Once you're finished, tap the checkmark.
  10. If you'd like to amp up the volume on your voiceover, or mute any background noise, select the audio clip again and the new options will appear on the bottom frame.
  11. Once you're all finished with your voiceover, tap the top right save icon.
  12. Adjust any necessary video settings. 4K is nice but it's not necessary so just set your resolution to 1080p, and your frame rate can stay at 30fps. You can also cut your video into separate riles but with the new Instagram update for stories, you can upload one long video and it will separate itself, so use this option when you see fit.
  13. There are plenty of ways to save or share your new voiceover, so have fun and make sure you keep them as organized as you can for future reference and sharing.

I hope this helps you get a bit more creative with your content and strategy. Remember, have fun and don't be afraid to try new things. You never know what could be a great fit!

Extra Additions

If you want to boost your voiceover, buy a mic attachment for your phone and a personal sound booth. Record in a quiet place and remember to stay hydrated for less noisy distraction.

You can find a virtual fill tool by pressing down with your finger while in the draw settings. Between the three different options, the marker fills with an 100% opacity while the highlighter fills with about 50%. There's also an option to erase where there is fill with the erase tool. These are all located at the top of the panel.

Paste Photo
If you copy an image from your Photo Album, you'll be able to paste it as a sticker in your Instagram Stories. You can do more than one and when you tap the image, it flips.

Hide Hashtags
Using Hashtags in your stories can get you some major engagement but sometimes the look of a hashtag can throw even the most attentive eye off. So, in order to hide a hashtag simply minimize the type to the smallest it can go and swipe it away from the screen. You can also hide them behind a sticker or another word.

Multiple Responses
In an effort to respond to more questions than one, you can add a question to your background, screenshot it, and add another question with that screenshot, and do that as many times as you see necessary.
